Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities: it is beautiful, safe and it is easy to get around. We had an amazing time during our visit in December. The city has a lot to offer with many wonderful restaurants, cafés, bakeries (I love a good cinnamon bun!), hotels and independent shops so there is plenty to do, see and eat. I did spend a lot (hours and hours) of researching hotels and I found some amazing places. I will share my finds with you so you don’t have to waste your time reading reviews, comparing sites and prices. I already did the work for you!

The Danish capital is divided into a pack of very different yet equally loveable neighborhoods, each with their own distinct vibes and looks. At the end of this article you can find a quick overview of my favorite areas as this information might help you to plan your best possible trip to Copenhagen. There are many amazing luxury hotels and boutique style properties to choose from. Here are my favorites (based on experiences and research):

1. Hotel Coco

Hotel Coco

Coco is beautiful boutique hotel in a lively part of Vesterbro. It is the first hotel from Cofoco, a popular and well-respected Danish restaurant group. The owners took an existing hotel and completely revamped it, using a mixture of vintage, modern and custom-made materials. The hotel’s atmosphere is a blend of Nordic cool and Parisian boho flair and there is a focus on sustainable initiatives. The comfortable Auping mattresses are topped with all organic bed linens and there are organic snacks and drinks on the mini-bar tray and Nordic ecolabel-certified toiletries in the bathrooms. The hotel is self-sufficient in energy as the owners have their own solar park in Jutland producing more energy than the hotel, and their restaurants, use. As a result, Coco has a negative carbon footprint. Also, the hotel is completely plastic free.

2. Hotel Grand Joanne

Hotel Grand Joanne

This is where we stayed during our last visit and we loved Grand Joanne! The rooms are beautifully decorated, there is a great vibe, the staff is genuinely friendly and welcoming and breakfast is amazing. Grand Joanne certainly made our stay in Copenhagen special. During our visit we have stayed in a standard room and in the penthouse. The standard rooms are cosy and comfortable. They are not very large but that did not bother us as the room had everything we needed. The penthouse is a lot bigger and it worth the splurge if your budget allows it.

In my opinion Grand Joanne is great value for money. The location is excellent, in Vesterbro, close to the train station, Tivoli and the city center. The restaurant is a bit expensive (food in general is expensive in Copenhagen) but it is great to have a glass of wine and the food is really wonderful. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace where you have a drink and relax after a busy day of sight-seeing.

3. Hotel Sanders

Interior designer Pernille Lind: “We wanted the customer to feel extremely relaxed, but also to see details that reference many different eras.” Located a stone’s throw from the main square Kongens Nytorv, the Royal Theatre and just 200 metres from Nyhavn, it is centrally located offersing easy access to all of the city’s neighbourhoods, restaurants, bars, shops and other attractions in the vicinity. The restaurant Sanders Kitchen offers a menu inspired by the Mediterranean cuisine and focuses on fresh and healthy food. Classic cocktails and carefully selected wines can be enjoyed at bar Tata, which offers a relaxed atmosphere in a vintage setting. And the inner courtyard is a perfect place to enjoy a drink or breakfast during sunny days.

6. Hotel SP34

Hotel SP34

Hotel SP34 is possibly the most luxurious hipster hotel you’ll find in Copenhagen. The hotel has 118 luxury rooms and suites that are all different but still share the same stylish aesthetic combining raw coolness with high-quality luxury. The hallways have raw exposed bricks inspired by the buildings in the neighborhood and the carpets reflect the streets and asphalt. With its minimalistic design, the hotel’s vibe can best be described as Nordic simplicity. The location, in the heart of Copenhagen’s Quartier Latin, is convenient.

Radisson Collection Royal Hotel

The Radisson Collection Royal Hotel is perfect for mid-century design lovers! Designed by Arne Jacobsen as Copenhagen’s first skyscraper, this modernist landmark recently undergone its most significant refurbishment since the opening in 1960. The result is a modern take on what the designers think Jacobsen would have done, while respecting the architect’s legacy and honoring the property’s iconic status as the world’s first design hotel. Jacobsen’s iconic Swan and Egg chairs are featured throughout the hotel. And there are regular tours of Room 606, a time capsule of a room perfectly preserved from the Sixties. The hotel is conveniently located close to the train station, Tivoli and the city center.

Hotel Danmark is an upscale luxury boutique hotel offering 89 exclusive rooms, rooftop terrace with city view and bar, urban vineyard garden, conference facilities and a traditional Danish restaurant. You stay in either the green tile-covered building – or the original protected white building. All beautifully designed with sophisticated interior mixed with new innovative features. Placed in the old museum quarter between the City Hall Square and The National Museum, Hotel Danmark offers a prime location only a short walk to Tivoli Gardens and right next to the main shopping street Strøget.

Audo Copenhagen

Audo Copenhagen is not a regular hotel. Audo House is designed as a hybrid between a hotel, a shop, an event space, a restaurant and a café. The refurbished old merchants’ house in the Nyhavn area has received a complete makeover by Norm Architects and Danish design brand Audo Copenhagen. All ten suits are decorated with rich earthy tones, solid oak floors and custom furniture and decorative objects.

Cool Copenhagen neighborhoods:

Vesterbro is one my favorite neighborhoods to stay in when visiting Copenhagen. It has a lively atmosphere, mixing family life with nightlife. There are numerous restaurants, bars and shops.

Nørrebro is a melting pot and it is popular among young locals and tourists. This area has many trendy cafés, restaurants and independent shops.

Christianshavn & Nyhavn: Christianshavn is known for its coloured houses and idyllic canals. It is one of Copenhagen’s most picturesque neighbourhoods.

Frederiksberg has a more classy and suburban feel with broad tree-lined boulevards, green gardens and streets filled with sidewalk cafés and gourmets spots.
