This modern house at the foot of the Table Mountain in Cape Town (South Africa) belongs to Sean Matias. This British director has created an original mixture between contemporary art, African influences and old Europe. In the living room (image above), the eye is inevitably drawn to the large painting by Conrad Boytes. One of the many art works from the great collection of contemporary art from the owner. The sofa is covered with a soft fabric flowers from Home Fabrics. Facing the sofa, there are two chairs ‘Louis Ghost‘ by Philippe Starck (Kartell).

The kitchen is equipped with furniture and accessories from the fifties bought in antique stores or found on South African farms.

A colorful palette brightens the dining room. Also this area is used to display works of art.

It is a warm day today, again. But I’m not complaining! The weather is great to eat outside on your terrace or garden. I hope you will be inspired by these beautiful images!

What a view! This house is also located on the Italian island Filicudi, one of eight islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago.

I love the Mediterranean atmosphere! Al fresco dining, cooking with the best seasonal ingredients… The Moro cookbooks are a great source for inspiration if you like to prepare some Mediterranean dishes.

winners of the ready-made-design competition

A while ago I announced the ready-made-design competition organised by online shop Das Rote Paket. The assignment was to create and build a ‘ready made light’ from prefabricated parts. Sonja from Das Rote Paket: ‘From all over the world clever people sent us their ready-made-lights. All together nearly 50 fantastic ready-mades…People had amazing ideas and used really all kind of materials!’. Above you can see two of the winning designs.

The first prize (top images) went to Bernhard Elsässer from Germany with his striking pendant “LE MAL 6” simply made out of a 6-way-socket strip and bulbs. The pendant is very plain, shapely, easy to build and reminds us to a modern chandelier. Below you can see 3rd prize winner Pendant “SHANDALIR designed by Nir Meiri from Israel. Her lamp is made out of recycled materials from the plant nursery industry. Black plant cups, water pipes and droppers were used for this beautiful florale pendant. A thank you to Das Rote Paket for oganising such a great design competition!

I just have to share these gorgeous images that I found on decor8 with you! The photo above is from the gorgeous apartment of Christina Lundsteen.

Christina is a Danish pillow designer. She makes the most beautiful pillows from from antique textiles. Her designs are available from Danish store Anker Living (they ship worldwide!).

amsterdam: noordermarkt (farmers market)

I am off to the Noordermarkt in Amsterdam this morning to get some delicious things for our bbq this weekend. This weekly organic farmers market is one of the gastronomic delights of Amsterdam! For food lovers travelling to Amsterdam, this is an experience that should not be missed.

The farmers market is located on the Noordermarkt, a delightful square nestled between the Westerstraat and the Prinsengracht in the heart of the very charming Jordaan quarter.

Specialist stalls carry an array of organic produced food: cheese, bread, vegetables, meat and flowers & plants of the season. There is a stall with the most delicious sausages, another stall has a stunning display of mushrooms and at another stall you can sample some delicious smoked mozzarella.

Over 30 stall holders arrive every Saturday before dawn to set up shop and they continue until 16:00. Around the market there are several nice cafes where can have a lovely cup of coffee.

Some historical background: the market has began in 1987 when Adri Vallentin, then owner of the popular café called Winkel on the Noordermarkt, has setup nine biological food stalls, hoping to draw more clients on Saturday morning to his café. Today is it is very popular market, small but lively, with an unique atmosphere.

The Noordermarkt is held every Saturday between 09:00 - 16:00. Enjoy!

I’m not feeling blue but I must say that I love these blue colours that I have been seeing lately. The image above is from the portfolio of photographer Luis Albuquerque. Isn’t that a gorgeous shade of blue?!

The image above and below were found on Decorology.

The blue colour on the wall is just gorgeous. I’m also loving the other jewel tones in this Swedish interior.

Unfortunately I can’t remember where I found the images above..

netherlands: north sea jazz

The famous North Sea Jazz festival is a great event to visit if you are in The Netherlands on 10-11-12 July. North Sea Jazz is known all over the world because of the many musical genres it has to offer, ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde jazz and electronic jazz; to blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. I have always enjoyed going to this festival but this year is even more special: my boyfriend Ivar will be playing on Friday 10th July with his band the Rare Groove Ochestra.
