recycled eco design
I love products made from recycled materials! It is not only better for the environment but products made from recylced materials also have a more unique quality compared to mass produced ‘standard’ items.

inspired by ‘delfts blauw’ – part 1

Lately I see a lot of designers and stylists being inspired by ‘Delfts blauw’. This blue and white pottery, also known as Delftware, is made in and around Delft, The Netherlands. It has been produced in this city for many centuries and is very popular with tourists visiting The Netherlands. Above are some images from a magazine (I have forgotten which magazine) where blue & white ceramics have been used for styling. Below you seen how Dutch designers are inspired by Delfts blauw.

Carpet by Marcel Wanders for Moooi (top left), MaMa vase by Roderick Vos (top right), bowl by Hella Jongerius (below left) and plate by Jurgen Bey (below right). There will be more Delfts blauw tomorrow.

suzani textiles

Lately I have been seen suzani textiles everywhere: in magazines, on blogs, in interior stylist photos etc. I don’t mind as I love these antique textiles. They are a great way to give a eclectic and unique atmosphere to your home.

For those not familiair with the term Suzani: this is an antique and decorative tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asia countries.

As you can see in these images, there are various ways for using a suzani as interior decoration. A small suzani is great as a wall-hanging (top photo), a larger one can be used as a tablecloth (second image). I also love the idea to use them to conceal a wardrobe as has been done in these images (above and below) that I found in Domino Magazine.

Online store Uzek Craft has a great collection of suzani. But I would certainly look on Ebay as well. Ebaystores Desert of Suzani and Great Silk Road have beautiful Suzanis and the prices are very reasonable. Depending on size and condition, you can ‘score’ an suzani for $50-150. By the way, the suzani featured in these photos is from Samarkand, Uzbekistan. A feature of the Samarkand embroidery suzani is the colour palette on a white or red background, having formed at the turn of centuries.

hem 2007 fair in stockholm

I finnaly had time this weekend to upload my pictures from Stockholm. Holly had an excellent post on Decor8 about all the fabulous shops we visited. Besides shopping, doing the usual sightseeing, going out for dinner etc, we also visited the Hem 2007 fair. Here are some photos of products and trends spotted on the fair. Swedish magazine ELLE Interiörs was present with a boot showing their favorite designs.

One of these products is this beautiful chair (images above) designed by Carl Malmsten.

There definitely was a lot of black and white on the fair. These are images (below and above) from some of the exhibitions created by Swedish stylists Jimmy Schönning and Helena Sandberg. They designed various living rooms decorated for parties (the central theme of the fair was ‘Oh, what a party!’). The second image above shows a new year party in an eldery couple’s home. The modern room is decorated with black furniture. The minimalistic, white interior (above and below) is from a single girl throwing a house warming party. The tiles are from Fotokakel . I see photo tiles being used more often and it is developing into a real trend.

But it was not only about black and white. There was a lot of colour (with an ethnic vibe) to be seen as well. The image below shows the boot of textile designer Ulrika Hedström.

Then there was also the stand of Liebling, showing colourful trays and other beautiful patterned accessories (image below).

The picture above is from “Teenage rooms” exhibition by Jan Rundgren.

The boot of Swedish interior shop Cosas showed the gorgeous work of Swedish ceramic designer Karin Eriksson.

Next week I will be visiting the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, so stay tuned for more design news!
