I was happy to see the Egyptian lights that we have at Le Souk on the cover of British magazine ELLE Decoration! At the far left is the Filisky Drop light, the second light from the left is the Filigrain Pendant, next to that is the Filisky Ball. All lamps are available in various sizes (as featured on the cover).

I’m loving this industrial chandelier which I found on decor8. This light fixture is designed by Workstead, a New York based collaboration by Robert Highsmith and Stefanie Brechbuehler. Workstead about their design: “This ceiling fixture, fuses the concept of the chandelier with a keen understanding of function and flexibility. It utilizes re-purposed O.C. White industrial joints, vintage Hubbell sockets, and new-cut steel. The arms can be articulated in multiple axes; the joints allow for 360 degrees of rotation. Sockets placed at the end of each arm have a turn-key function, allowing for 1 – 3 bulbs to be illuminated at any given time. The fixture is both articulate and elemental. Its goal is to gracefully exhibit the physical properties of light.”

Louis Poulsen’s Toldbod 120 pendant light comes in 5 new colors. The colour scheme is named Northern Lights. The colours were found in the Scandinavian landscape. Attempts were made at visualising fields, shores, skies and flora in the beautiful and delicate shades, the strong and effective nuances, in clean and bold colours. As a design element, the fixtures are adorned with coloured cables in daring contrasts underpinning the colour combinations of nature.

Misty Blue is inspired by the budding dawn and combined with a mauve cable, Black Berries is black and inspired by the blackberry bush with berries and stalks or leaves, therefore the green cable. Yellow Blossom draws inspiration from the beautiful yellow nuances of the dandelion and the combination with a white cable lends a particular freshness to the fixture. The clouds inspired Cloudy White, which gives a breath of fresh air to any interior design with its turquoise cable. Grey Thunder, mat and rustic, was inspired by a rape field during a thunderstorm, with the obvious yellow cable. I like how this modern lamp fits into this somewhat rustic interior (image above). Simplicity is one of the keys to Toldbod’s unique adaptability to any style and architecture!

A while ago I announced the ready-made-design competition organised by online shop Das Rote Paket. The assignment was to create and build a ‘ready made light’ from prefabricated parts. Sonja from Das Rote Paket: ‘From all over the world clever people sent us their ready-made-lights. All together nearly 50 fantastic ready-mades…People had amazing ideas and used really all kind of materials!’. Above you can see two of the winning designs.
The first prize (top images) went to Bernhard Elsässer from Germany with his striking pendant “LE MAL 6” simply made out of a 6-way-socket strip and bulbs. The pendant is very plain, shapely, easy to build and reminds us to a modern chandelier. Below you can see 3rd prize winner Pendant “SHANDALIR designed by Nir Meiri from Israel. Her lamp is made out of recycled materials from the plant nursery industry. Black plant cups, water pipes and droppers were used for this beautiful florale pendant. A thank you to Das Rote Paket for oganising such a great design competition!

Although the renovation of our home was finished months ago, we still have a long list of things to do. One of these things was to install the light fixture in our bedroom. Now this has been done I can finally post a picture of our bedroom. I am very happy with the star-shaped pendant lamp. The lamp, which is available at Le Souk, has been handmade in Egypt. Traditional techniques and craftsmanship are combined with a modern design. The little holes give the most gorgeous light effect on walls and ceiling. Also the wooden stool (used as bedside table), the Flower bedside lamps and the aluminium folding table are from Le Souk.

Another peek into our new house: above our wooden dining table (made from recycled wood that is over 100 years old) we have two Shady Tree ceiling lamps from Dutch designer Nicolette Brunklaus. This beautiful lamp, which is available from online shop POAA, has a large translucent shade that is white on the outside. When the light is turned on a forest scene printed on the inside is revealed.

If you love design and good ideas, then take part in this great design competition organised by Das Rote Paket! The task: Create and build a “ready made light”! Your lamp should be made of prefabricated parts. It doesn’t matter if it is a floor lamp, pendant or chandelier provided that the costs for all parts do not exceed 40 Euros. And it should be possible for others to replicate the lamp.
The price: Of course you’ll get fame and reputation among the internet community, but it is also fun and makes you feel good to be a lamp designer! If that is not enough, you might be the happy winner of an extraordinary, original sausage rug WURSTTEPPICH, a Das rote Paket shopping voucher or at least a little surprise … Click here for more information. Get your creative juices flowing! The deadline is 30th of April 2009. The best designs will be showed here on the style files of course!
