For those living in The Netherlands, or for those who are in the ‘neighborhood’ in November, there is a great event that can’t be missed! Online shopping portal Flavourites is organising their unique web shopping event for the third time. From 18 – 20 November over 160 online shops will be selling their most beautiful items live (in stead of online) during this 3-day event in a cool and urban location in Amsterdam. Very handy, especially with the holiday season approaching. And there is more than shopping … you can also attend some fun workshops. For more information you can visit the Flavourites Live website (which is in Dutch).

This Halloween, super stylish children’s boutique Smallable is putting on a spooky scavenger hunt with a special Halloween Prize to win. The fashion and design concept store for kids ages 0-12 has hidden four Halloween characters on their site… a witch, a ghost, a scarecrow, and a pumpkin! Your mission:
1) Find one or more of the villains on the Smallable site and click the «like» button next to the character to show you’ve found it.
2) Then go to the facebook page and leave a comment to say you have played (but shhhh! Don’t say where the spooky character is hidden!)
3) Smallable will announce the winner and special Halloween prize.
Here’s a hint to find one of the hidden spooky characters: The witch is looking for a new black dress… look for her in the girls clothing section!
Too easy? Find all four! The scarecrow, ghost, and pumpkin are lurking in the midst…

I’m loving this initiative! Mary, Clare, and Crystal wanted to bake all day and night, experiment with new recipes, and make their favorite stuff but they knew there was no way on planet Earth that they could eat all the sweets they wanted to make. They had to come up with a way to share. So they founded Treat Street. Treat Street is the original, friendly, neighborhood, underground, roving, secret bakery. Every so often, they set up cardboard shop in a driveway with a table or two loaded with homemade goodness and wait to see what happens. Friends, neighbors, and total strangers show up and eat treats!

This beautiful woodwork has been made by Ryuji Mitani who is a bit of a local handcraft hero in Japan. He set up his own workshop in Matsumoto in 1981 called Persona Studio, specialising in wooden tableware, working with local craftsmen to try and keep traditional handcraft skills alive.

In celebration of his book ‘Handcraft in Distant Towns, Japanese shop Sfera is hosting an exhibition of the items featured in the book.

The exhibition can be visited in Kyoto, Japan, until 30th August 2009.

These images where shot for ‘Pretty Dutch’ an exhibition about Dutch porcelain from the 18th century. Unfortunately the exhibition is no longer open but the gorgeous images are definitely worth showing.

During the Dutch Design Week 2007 in Eindhoven Anna ter Haar, graduate of the Design Academy, showed her graduation project ‘Buitenbeentje‘. Buitenbeentje, which is Dutch for odd man out, is a research on the qualities of poly-urethane resin. Anna is fascinated by everything that differs the normal: the odd man out, the freaks. Anna: ‘Certain appearances that are so ugly and disgusting that they become interesting’. The stools are part of the project and were on display at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan.

As a graduate from the Design Academy, Croatian born Ivana Borovnjak showed her work during the Dutch Design Week. A Dictionary of Cups is part of her project Logic of Language vs. World of Objects. In this thesis Ivana articulates a theory of how language as a communication system can affect designing process, and become a tool for generating new ideas. She tried to compare the World of Words with the World of Objects. Through a concise translation of philosophical texts into the language of cups and saucers and their relationships, a series of cups develops new insights. This project is not only very interesting but also visually very beautiful.
