farmer in search of style

dutchdesign1.jpg
These beautiful pouffes from Christien Meindertsma were recently displayed at an expostion called ‘Farmer in search of style’ which was organised by Designhuis Eindhoven. The pilosophy behind the exposition is that everything seems to indicate that rural realities are influencing urban life. The greening of the city and the urbanization of the country will ultimately lead to the blurring of borders between these two domains. Designers, artists and architects are reflecting upon this exchange of ideas.

In a first trial to understand and map this movement, through fifteen installations, Designhuis Eindhoven is exploring a new lifestyle where humans are seen as an integral part of the ecologic cycle, integrated in the process.

b-set by hella jongerius – 10th anniversary

The B-set from Hella Jongerius was launched in 1999 and is generally considered to be an icon in the history of Dutch design. Reason enough for Royal Tichelaar Makkum to celebrate its 10th anniversary by extending the set with four new colours: blue, green, brown and pink.

While makers of crockery usually aim for perfection, the B-set is conspicuous for plates that can barely be stacked orderly, dishes that are not quite circular and mugs of varying thickness. Such little deviations come unavoidable with the deliberately chosen production process. The peccadillos make each piece special; the beauty of imperfection is made visible in a most inspiring manner.

The B-set is available from Royal Tichelaar.

amsterdam: restored

Restored is one of my favorite new shops in Amsterdam and a must-visit if you happen to be here in the city. Restored is a run by two very creative ladies, Petra and Marijke. Every item in their shop is unique and hand-made.

In addition to their own designs, they also sell ceramics, jewellery, pillows, bags and accessories from 15 other designers. As Petra and Marijke are passionate to show beauty to the world, they also have an ‘open atelier’ in the back of the store.

A large part of the collection is made from recycled materials, hence the name Restored.

Address: Haarlemmerdijk 39, Amsterdam. Website: www.restored.nl

piet boon’s caribbean beach house

Last week I posted about a beach house designed by Piet Boon. Today’s post features Piet Boon’s own house on the island of Bonaire. The house designed by the man himself of course.

Also for this house a lot of natural materials have been used. Like in most Caribbean houses, the wind through the open windows works as a natural air conditioner.

Sigh … look at the colour of the ocean!

giant rug by christien meindertsma

A long time ago when I justed started this blog I posted about Christien Meindertsma’s giant knitwork. I just found this picture (via Les Carnets du Design) of a piece Christien created for the exhibit Design for a Living World, which just opened at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. The exhibit aims to tell a unique story about the life-cycle of materials and the power of conservation and design. Christien used wool sourced from a sustainable sheep ranch in Idaho to create a large scale knit rug a “flock” of smaller components, each one made from 3.5 pounds of wool, the yield of a single sheep. Then she sewed them all together to make one giant rug.

piet boon uitdoor furniture

On my wish list for outdoor furniture is this set designed by Piet Boon (in the previous post you can see a Caribbean beach house that he designed). Seat GIJS is made from teak and has water-resistant cushions. Table ANNE is available in a low and in a high version. The seats and table would look fantastic on our terrace in Zuiderwoude but I’m afraid they will remain on our wish list for a while. High quality materials have been used for Boon’s furniture which also mean a high price tag..
