ruth gurvich

Born in Argentine artist Ruth Gurvich is now working and living in France. As you can see from the images above and below her work is simply gorgeous! For the past few years Ruth has been working with everyday objects like Bauhaus design chairs, Chinese and European porcelain which she reproduces in paper in three dimension models and then rework their volume.

Ruth: ‘My art is based on a continuous exploration of the codes created by different cultures in their artistic production. From a formal point of view, my field of investigation is based on the study of volume and its relationship to space. With my work I try to find the traces of our past in this cultural melting pot, I try to find the sense of these references, lost through migrations and the passing time’. You can visit Ruth’s website to find out more about her beautiful work.

art made from plastic bags

Texas based Virginia Fleck sent me an email to introduce her art work made from plastic shopping bags. Virginia’s work, that can be used as meditation mandalas, has been commissioned for both temporary and permanent public art projects throughout the US and has been featured in several magazines.

Virginia: “My wall-sized mandalas, created from sections of used plastic shopping bags, analyze the activity of consumerism as a spiritual encounter. This visual experience of repetitive designs, indicative of meditative objects and advertising graphics, stimulates the viewer to yearn for more”. Visit Virginia’s website to see more of her beautiful work.

zaishu

Zaishu is artwork that functions as seat, table or box, combining award winning design with ethical and responsible production methods. Transcending social and cultural barriers, Zaishu collaborates internationally with various artists such as David Bromley, Stewart Russell from ‘Spacecraft’ and the Florence Broadhurst print archive. Zaishu also features artwork from various community groups, endangered tribal art, as well as hand painted work from the last of the Bollywood artists.

Designed and made in Australia from native plantation pine, using water-based inks and varnish, Zaishu has a ‘Good Environmental Choice’ certification and comes flat-packed in collectable limited editions which simply slot together. My favourite is Antique Kimono (top image), featuring rare patterns from 16th century Edo period Japan, which can be bought from zaishu’s website (price is AUD$350).

New at the Beholder, an online gallery featuring the works of emerging artists from the U.S. and Canadais, the beautiful work of Klea McKenna. Klea is a San Francisco artist whose career is definitely one to watch. Featured is work from her series Hollow Mountain and other Stories, which draws on the imagery of fiction; short stories, folktales and local gossip.

Klea McKenna was raised in the bohemian subcultures of rural northern California and Hawaii. She has studied art at CCA, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, and Florence Art Institute. The work in this series, Hollow Mountain and other Stories, draws on the imagery of fiction; short stories, folktales and local gossip. Her photographs explore ideas of contemporary mythology and seek to discover the aesthetics of these familiar American narratives. Klea’s work has been published and exhibited nationally. She currently lives in San Francisco and is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree at California College of the Arts. For more information or if you would like to purchase Klea’s work, you can visit the Beholder website.

pile of clothes or map of europe?

This may look like just as a pile of clothes. But if you take a better look you can see that this pile has the shape of Europe, with the boot resembling Italy of course. I noticed this photo by Corriette Schoenaerts a while ago in Rails Magazine (a free magazine distributed in trains in The Netherlands). The central theme of the magazine was ‘countries and borders’. Contrary to the usual fashion photography, that shows off the newest clothes on a human body and wants to sell an ideal, Corriette made still lives depicting maps and landscapes.
