life style fair in amsterdam

Unfortunately I could not visit the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam this year due to a very busy calendar. This lifestyle fair is held yearly and is always a great source of (interior) inspiration. Luckily I found some images of this year’s event at she.likes.cute.

All the major Dutch interior magazines were present with an entire decorated ‘inspiration house’ in which they showed the latest interior design trends. My favorite magazine VT Wonen decorated their house in neutral, light colors. Natural materials such as wood, wool and felt were used. This gave a warm and inviting feel to the house. The knitted rug in the image above is from Christien Meindertsma.

A colourful installation made from various objects.

The electronic fire place is designed by Piet Hein Eek.

I love this combination of bright white and wood.

Delft’s Blue inspired designs are big trend.

affordable design hotel at amsterdam airport

An affordable luxury hotel will be opened at Schiphol Amsterdam airport early 2008. Hotel CitizenM offers luxury and design at 14m2 only. CitizenM – short for citizen mobile – has reflected on and learnt from the needs of a new type of traveller, the mobile citizens. These travellers know what they like in a good hotel and what they don’t need from a bad one. What they like includes stylish design and great value. Amsterdam interior design studio Concrete is responsible for the design of hotel and rooms.

More of these modular, high-tech hotels will be opened in Barcelona, Berlin, Milan, Brussels and Copenhagen. Visit the CitizenM website for more information.

amsterdam’s new library

Amsterdam has a new library and it is gorgeous. The building on the restructured Oosterdokseiland (near Amsterdam Central Station) is definetely worth a visit when you are in the neighbourhood. Jo Coenen is the architect of this public library, which is the largest in The Netherlands. Coenen has created a refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors by using a raised plinth. The reading and study rooms are like terraces and are placed around large and tall empty spaces.

The library is open to the public seven days a week from 10 o’clock in the morning to 10 o’clock at night. The address is Oosterdokskade 143 in Amsterdam.

de bakkerswinkel in amsterdam by piet hein eek

A great place to have coffee and/or lunch in Amsterdam is De Bakkerswinkel at the Westergasfabriek premises. They serve excellent coffees and their delicious sandwiches are made with traditionally baked bread. I was there last weekend and had a scone with the most delicious mango & orange jam (home-made!). Not only the food but also the interior is worth the visit, all furniture is designed and custom made by Piet Hein Eek.

If you love the furniture and would like to have the same style in your home then visit Piet Hein Eek’s website to see his upholstery collection. This beautiful collection of furniture is similar to the furniture in De Bakkerswinkel.
