WEEKEND ESCAPE: GET IN HOLIDAY MOOD

Holidays are important. Most of us work hard and have busy lives. And during our holidays we relax, recharge and spend valuable time with our kids. But vacation time can be stressful as well. We want to find the perfect holiday destination, get value for hard earned money, have the best time and expectations are high. I used to travel quite a bit when I was younger and our first holiday as parents was a disaster. I still had the ‘old’ concept (do nothing but sleeping in, read 10 books, drink cocktails and go for the occasional swim in the ocean) in mind but did not expect that at our holiday destination I had to do the same things as at home (= changing nappies, get up early, wash tons of cloths, have little sleep). Only the weather was better but we hardly noticed that as we spent most of the time inside trying to get the baby asleep or waiting for him to wake up. And then there was the crying.. most tears that were shed were mine.

I have learned from this experience and now know the criteria for a great holiday (main thing is to make sure that my three year old son is happy). There are more people with the same dilemma as friends and readers often ask me if I can give them advice about child friendly holidays that are parent friendly as well. Next month we are off to Greece for a 2 week holiday and we are planning a trip to the South of France and perhaps to Ibiza (Spain) as well this year. Next year I hope to go to Bali (Indonesia) again. What are your holiday plans? And what are you favorite destinations? Any tips for people with kids? I (and a lot of others) would like to know! Here some tropical images to get in holiday spirit. Enjoy! You can find more holiday and summer related photos on this and this Pinterest board.

  1. Hi Danielle, actually you are often a source of inspiration for me as you features such lovely holiday places and gorgeous houses; I just posted my blogroll where you feature in good place !

But helping people find nice holiday places for their family holidays is exactly why I started my blog six months ago, http://fromthepoolside.com. I try to spot and I review boutique hotels, chic rentals that are good for families with children and I add my tips.

For a nice holiday in Greece, I would recommend Rou Estate which has lovely houses, some with private pools but there is also a communal pool. It’s better for older kids though due to the steps throughout the estate.
Also love Le Mas de la Rose in Provence with a beach-kind of pool (ie gentle entry so perfect for little kids) and delicious food.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Thanks Stéphanie, I certainly will be checking out your blog! Best, Danielle

  3. Whew, if those photographs don’t get you in the mood for a getaway I don’t know what will.

    Really beautiful choices!

  4. Danielle, thank you for this interesting post! Since I have children I spend my holiday different that I used to. Before they were completely filled with things to see and discover, ( we are architects marriage, which is passionate about work also during holiday ;-) now we taking it SLOW . We have two boys in age 7 and 3. What is our perfect holiday ? Well, we have one of them 2 years ago. We rent a summer house close by Aarhus in Denmark, with friends with kids. Which is very important, becouse this way your kids get a company to play and you have a friends to spend some nice evenings together, or you can also go out . We had a house 5 minutes from the beach, so kids love it, we made few trips to see architecture/design in Aarhus and around ( so it was something what we like too) we made a day in Legoland ( kids were in heaven! ) and we sometimes just stay at lovely Danish modern summer house which we loved too, spending time with kids and relax …
I just booked again an house in Denmark in different place, for the coming May holiday, and just can’t wait to go! and kid’s too!

  5. I absolutely love the picture of the swing? Where did it come from? It’s dreamy! Is there anyway I can share it on my Facebook page? I would of course link it back to your amazing site.
