christmas trees

Are you bored with the traditional pine tree as a Christmas tree? Use you imagination and create a unique tree! Here are some examples of non-traditional trees.

All these trees were part of a project initiated by the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2004. Every year all kind of ‘trees’ are exhibited. The way of realization is totally open, the subject should be taken rather abstract. The result is some interesting trees! Click here to see more of them.

christmas tree by buro north

Today and the coming days will be about Christmas trees. Not the traditional pine trees, but special ones! I love this tree designed by Buro North from Australia that I found through Bloesem.

The tree is 80% more environmental friendly than a traditional x-mas tree. It is made with environmentally aware materials and a low-energy production technique has been used. Also, the tree will be shipped flat-packet (emissions efficient!) and above all, this Christmas tree can be used for many Christmases to come! If you are interested in purchasing this beautiful tree (available in 3 sizes), you can send an email to shop@buronorth.com.

fence of pencils

I found this image on Apartment Therapy but it has also popped up on a few other blogs. The origin of the photo is a mystery; it is not known who the photographer is and were this house with that special fence is located. But we do know that there must be a very creative (and daring) person living in that house!

mara skujeniece

Every time I visit ‘De Bakkerswinkel’ (great scones with homemade jam!) in Amsterdam I admire their beautiful tableware (image above) designed by Mara Skujeniece. Mara, born in Latvia, has her studio in Amsterdam from where she works on her growing collection of ceramics, interior accessories and furniture.

Above you can see some of her designs. The table linnen collection (top left) is available from Vivian Hann in Amsterdam. Mara’s left-over spoons (top right + below left) are available per piece, each one is unique (€5 per spoon). The porcelain vases (below right) are for one flower only. To see more of Mara’s designs, you can visit her website by clicking here.

zaishu

Zaishu is artwork that functions as seat, table or box, combining award winning design with ethical and responsible production methods. Transcending social and cultural barriers, Zaishu collaborates internationally with various artists such as David Bromley, Stewart Russell from ‘Spacecraft’ and the Florence Broadhurst print archive. Zaishu also features artwork from various community groups, endangered tribal art, as well as hand painted work from the last of the Bollywood artists.

Designed and made in Australia from native plantation pine, using water-based inks and varnish, Zaishu has a ‘Good Environmental Choice’ certification and comes flat-packed in collectable limited editions which simply slot together. My favourite is Antique Kimono (top image), featuring rare patterns from 16th century Edo period Japan, which can be bought from zaishu’s website (price is AUD$350).

If you are looking for beautiful Christmas ornaments, you should check out Gosia’s etsy store bluebellbazaar. These vintage inspired ornaments were designed by Gosia in 2006 and are hand made and hand painted in Europe ($12-16 for a set of 4). You can also find great vintage gifts for Christmas in Gosia’s store.

embroidery carpet

When I saw this photo on Flickr I was immediately drawn to that gorgeous carpet. Esther from The Netherlands made this carpet out of the collection embroideries that she had collected. The result is this work of art! Esther is known for her beautiful bags which have been featured in various Dutch magazines. Check out her website for more information and to see her designs.
