edholm ullenius

My trip to Stockholm has really inspired me to write more about the many talented Swedish designers and artists. Today’s post is about Sissi Edholm and Lisa Ullenius, two graphic designers who met at Beckmans School of Design in Stockholm.

Sissi and Lisa design the most gorgeous patterns and illustrations. The top illustration part of design program for Amaranten. The other illustration belongs to a series of postcards designed for Posten.

Some of their designs you might recognise, as this talented duo has created several products for IKEA: Christmas collection ISIG (top images) and TRIPP coffee and tea jars.

Some other of their gorgeous designs: illustrations for books, cards and trays for Bookbinders Designs (top), a cute table with a lot to look at while waiting (middle), and a pattern inspired by spring for books, cards and trays.

For more information and to see more of their beautiful work, please visit the Edhom Ullenius website.

white vacuum cleaner by pia wallen

At Hem 2007 in Stockholm I saw this white vacuum cleaner. Being a ‘white lover’ I had to find out more about it. The white edition of the Ultra Silencer vacuum cleaner is designed by Swedish designer Pia Wallen for Electrolux.

Electrolux invited Wallén to produce her own interpretation of the Ultra Silencer, one of the world’s quietest vacuum cleaners. The result is startling in its simplicity. Pia found inspiration in the extraordinary quietness of the cleaner. It reminded her of the most beautiful sound she knows – the sound of falling snow. The result is a vacuum cleaner that is as easy on the eyes as it is the ears. Totally white, the design is boldly unconventional and as fresh as a layer of Scandinavian snow. But in Pia Wallén’s work, there is always a touch of humour. Flashes of bright orange on some of the machine’s functions echo the colour of guide poles that are used to mark pathways through the Swedish winter landscape.

Visit Pia’s website to see more of her work. On the website of Electrolux you can find out more about the Ultra Silencer.

squint patchwork furniture

I love the colourful, quirky furniture designs of Squint! This UK company redesigns old, antique furniture by upholstering them in colourful vintage fabrics.

It is worth checking out their website where you can see a slide show of their gorgeous furniture pieces.

rina menardi

I love the work of ceramic artist Rina Menardi. The collection of this Italian brand is timeless, influenced by sculpture and art. Each piece is deliberately irregular and therefore unique and very personal.

Rina has a preference for natural elements such as stones, shells and barks. And she combines traditional and modern techniques to created all her wonderful designs. Her selection of shapes and colors of the pieces conveys a refined elegance and an intrinsic strength and power. Click here if you are interested in her beautiful work.

illy’s cosy container cafe

Artist/architect Adam Kalkin has transformed standard shipping containers into living quarters. His Quick House can be used for different circumstances, from disaster-relief housing to luxury dwellings and for promotional purposes. Italian espresso company Illy has used the Quick House at the 52nd Venice Biennale to provide visitors a space to relax and to enjoy their complimentary espresso.

With the push of a button, the Illy house opens in 90 seconds like a flower and transforms from a compact container into a fully furnished and functional space with a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and library. All materials used were recyclable or recycled. Between November 28 and December 29, 2007, New York holiday shoppers have a chance to sit down and relax in Kalkin’s creation as Illy will install the temporary Push Button cafe in the Time Warner Centre.

Kalkin’s concept can also be used for luxury dwellings, as pictured above. Seeing this, I wouldn’t mind living a container like that!

gwyneth paltrow’s hamptons house

I like peaking into people’s houses! Especially if these houses belong to stylish people as Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth’s new summer home in the Hamptons, USA, was recently featured in House & Garden. The actress was very involved in the design of her serene new home. “I’ve become an encyclopedia of design for my friends,” she tells House & Garden.

Top image of kitchen: The spacious kitchen is lined with cabinets by Minkoff; the striking chandeliers are from Home and Co. for Birgit Israel, London; the concrete counters, from Remik Studio, Brooklyn, NY, are punctuated with a stove from Jade Range.

Image left of foyer: The bolero chair is from Mariette Himes Gomez for Hickory Chair, upholstered in Schumacher’s Lace in Aqua; Directions’ Glam console table is topped with a découpage barnacle lamp from John Derian, NYC; the needlework art is from Ann Carrington and the wallpaper is Zoffany’s Cordoba in Gray.

Image right: Gwyneth, wearing a Marc Jacobs dress, sits on Thomas O’Brien’s Farra cocktail ottoman for Hickory Chair, in front of her Odessa sofa by Les Migrateurs; the art is by Andy Warhol.

Paltrow likes clean lines and cool colors; her aesthetic can be described as minimalist with a feminine twist. To establish this look, she worked with architectural designer Michael Minkoff.

Top right image of staircase: Tom Dixon’s Mirror Ball pendants hang over the staircase.

Image below left of living room: Pieces from the Domus Design Collection are paired with Madeline Weinrib’s Hollywood Regency chair and china and vases from Calypso Home.

Image below right of bedroom: The bed is from Usona’s Thurman and is covered in Edelman’s Cashmere Calf in Super White; the Wendell Castle’s Muse side table is topped with Vaughan’s Lausanne Crystal lamp; the wallpaper is Wook Kim’s Feu in Gray; carpet is fromTai Ping and all bedding is from Donna Karen.

hem 2007 fair in stockholm

I finnaly had time this weekend to upload my pictures from Stockholm. Holly had an excellent post on Decor8 about all the fabulous shops we visited. Besides shopping, doing the usual sightseeing, going out for dinner etc, we also visited the Hem 2007 fair. Here are some photos of products and trends spotted on the fair. Swedish magazine ELLE Interiörs was present with a boot showing their favorite designs.

One of these products is this beautiful chair (images above) designed by Carl Malmsten.

There definitely was a lot of black and white on the fair. These are images (below and above) from some of the exhibitions created by Swedish stylists Jimmy Schönning and Helena Sandberg. They designed various living rooms decorated for parties (the central theme of the fair was ‘Oh, what a party!’). The second image above shows a new year party in an eldery couple’s home. The modern room is decorated with black furniture. The minimalistic, white interior (above and below) is from a single girl throwing a house warming party. The tiles are from Fotokakel . I see photo tiles being used more often and it is developing into a real trend.

But it was not only about black and white. There was a lot of colour (with an ethnic vibe) to be seen as well. The image below shows the boot of textile designer Ulrika Hedström.

Then there was also the stand of Liebling, showing colourful trays and other beautiful patterned accessories (image below).

The picture above is from “Teenage rooms” exhibition by Jan Rundgren.

The boot of Swedish interior shop Cosas showed the gorgeous work of Swedish ceramic designer Karin Eriksson.

Next week I will be visiting the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, so stay tuned for more design news!
