YOU_U enlighted flower is one object that has two functions. This vase and candle holder is designed by LUCY.D, a design office based in Vienna, Austria. Inspired by archaic forms and reduced icons this table object gives pleasure and more space to the users around the table. It is made from a curved metal tube, powder coated.
LUCY.D, founded by Barbara Ambrosz and Karin Stiglmair, is specialised in product, furniture and interior design. These Austrian designers reflect on culture, tradition and the changes within. By combining the old and known with actual needs and unusual materials, they give an input on all-day-life. Their designs, which are functional and experimental, tell new tales – they are irritating the user’s way of looking at things. Visit LUCY.D’s website to learn more about their fun designs.

Dinosaur Design from Australia does not only have a beautiful collection of home accessories, but they have a fun collection on colourful, resin jewellery as well. I have featured their home line earlier this year but as their photos are eye candy I couldn’t resist publishing some more.

This chandelier, with items that you can find in an avarage hotel room, is also part of the Helsinki Hotel exhibtion. The designers are Julia Wülfing, David Dahlhaus Mora and Saara Kaatra from Finland.

The Ace Hotels offer handsome accommodations which combine modern lines with an eclectic sensibility, re-interpreting the classic flavor and affordability of European-style lodging. There is an ‘Ace’ in Seattle (USA) and one in Portland (USA).

My favourite is the one in Portland, it is beautifully decorated! Click here to visit the Ace Hotels website where you can see more of their gorgeous rooms.

I posted this week about Israeli design studio Reddish but forget to mention this chair which is created from an old bath tub. The chair doesn’t look very comfortable (perhaps that can be solved with a cushion) but I like the idea of creating new furniture from recycled materials.

The tub has been cut, bent and legs added and voila: a chair is created. Visit Reddish’s website for more information.

The perfect dress to wear to a picnic! Reddish from Israel created the Buttercup dress from three different food related fabrics. With this fun dress you can have a festive meal wherever you are!

Although autumn is not far away, we can still have some beautiful summer days. A perfect way to spend a sunny day is having a picnic! The problem with picnics is they always take so much planning, putting all those utensils and glasses and plates together so well in advance that sometimes the spontaneity is…gone. Picnic set XXD solve this problem by providing an instant picnic set that is small enough to fit in the glove compartment of your car.
Equipped with two plastic plates, two sets of silverware, a corkscrew and a container for salt and pepper, the picnic set unfolds to provide an instant “blanket” and everything you need for instant gratification – just add a bottle of wine, some bread , cheese, salami….and you’re ready to eat, wherever you are! Available from A&R for $52.00.
Today I would you like to show you design from Israel! Reddish is a design studio founded in 2002 by Industrial designers Naama Steinbock and Idan Friedman. Both are graduates with distinction from the Holon Academic Institute of Technology, Israel. Reddish studio focuses on keeping its designs clear and intriguing, and spends most of the time helping objects feel better about themselves. The studio works with clients, giving them design services from new concepts to final product planning, and in the same time initiates projects – for exhibitions and worldwide distribution.

The cuckoo clock is an offspring of a traditional cuckoo clock and a digital wrist watch. Prima Ballerina is a one-legged table. While the traditional wooden turned leg is made by subtracting material, the prima ballerina’s leg is made by adding material, coiling thread around a pole. This surprising combination produces graceful structures, with soft textured curves. With this technique, endless number of leg versions is possible, made in different shapes and of different threads and colors.

x-bread (top row images) is a cross stitched bread stand. This is an offspring of a bread stand and a small tablecloth. The delicate embroidered wood enables the anonymous bread board to leave the kitchen and become a respected center piece.
Yakuza (2nd row) is a table that has been digitally tattooed. In its design, the table is treated as a living body, receiving its character from a unique tattoo printed on its surface. The wood texture acts as skin, becoming a platform for expressing a strong cultural and personal identity. The digital printing technology enables to easily treat each table individually, making them unique – just like people.
With x-table (3rd row) the genes of two products, a table and a map, have been mixed together into a new combination of materials, shapes and traditions. The table is handcrafted with care, the hard wood is softened by the touch of embroidery.
These are just some of Reddish’s beautiful designs. You can visit their website to see their entire collection.

I earlier wrote about the very interesting exhibition Helsinki Hotel, where designers from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland, show their perception of a hotel. Contemporary living, hotel environment and Finnish culture through space, objects and events is explored by this talented group of young designers.
One of them is Niina Aalto, an “ambitious and hard-working daydreamer who considers herself to be somewhere between a designer and an artist”. Niina designed Everyday Sunday, a set of beautiful cupholders for plastic cups. Niina about the philosophy behind her design: “Using disposable cups is common in hotels. Extending their function to a more specified and dignified level is my comment for a more playful way of living. Everyday Sunday is a plastic cup holder, which customizes a plastic cup for different situations by creating an illusion of authenticity”.
